Service manual leaks for new Nexus phone, LG’s lawyers vouch for it

Contains full spec list and pictures.
by Ron Amadeo

The service manual for the LG-D821 (also known as "the next Nexus phone") leaked over the weekend; with it came a treasure trove of information. Any doubts about the leak's authenticity were erased when Android Police, the site that originally released the document, was asked by LG to remove the manual and pictures—no one sends a cease and desist letter for fake information.
Little here should seem surprising. The new Nexus phone will be manufactured by LG and looks like a smaller version of the G2. The G2's 5.2-inch display has been reduced to 4.95", and with the smaller size comes a smaller battery (2300 mAh vs. 3000 mAh on the G2). The camera has also been downgraded from the G2's 13MP sensor to a paltry 8MP. Camera quality has always been a weak spot for the Nexus line, and unless this is some kind of "lower megapixels = larger pixels" renovation of the camera, the smaller sensor is disappointing. A 2.3Ghz Snapdragon 800, 2GB of RAM, NFC, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n (though no ac), and wireless charging round out the specs. The manual mentions 16GB and 32GB of storage, which hopefully means Google is dumping the previous (and tiny) 8GB option that could easily be filled with a few games.
LTE support is similar to the international G2, with support for frequencies in the 800, 850, 900, 1800, 2100, and 2600 MHz bands. If this document is to be believed, this means no support for AT&T or Verizon LTE, which both need 700MHz support. The leaked service manual also lists the new Nexus as only supporting Bluetooth 3.0, which can't possibly be true, so clearly there are some bugs to work out in this draft. This manual is for the LG-D821, but there is also an LG-D820, which may be a US version with different carrier support.

Has Google accidentally shown off the Nexus 5?

Google may have accidentally shown off its much rumoured Nexus 5 smartphone before it is officially unveiled.

Following the announcement of Android KitKat 4.4, the company posted a video showing the unveiling of the new KitKat statue.

In the video, it shows staff at Google attending the unveiling; many of them filming the event on their Android smartphones and tablets.

However, one employee appears to be filming the event using an unknown Nexus device. The scene appeared 38–39 seconds. A screen capture of that moment is below.

Nexus 5 leak close up

The video has since been taken down by Google adding fire to the suggestion that we may have accidentally been privy the the first sighting of the rumoured Nexus 5.

From the size of the device, its horizontal Nexus branding and the feint LG logo at the bottom of the handset, it is more than possible this is the Nexus 5.

Rumours began emerging last month, suggested that Google has asked LG to make a five-inch Nexus smartphone based on its recently launched G2 handset.

Those reports have suggested that on the outside, the Nexus 5 would look similar to the Nexus 4, with a glass back. The phone in the video matches that description.

Internally, the phone is rumoured to come with a 5.2-inch display and be based upon the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset. Other rumours have suggested Google may opt for the slightly older Snapdragon 600 chipset in an effort to help keep prices down.

Google has so far refused to comment on whether or not the device in the video was a Nexus 5.

Looking at previous Nexus launches, it seems about right that Google is preparing to launch a new model of its pure-Android handset line up.

Google unveiled the Nexus 4 at the end of October last year. We’d peg that as the most likely date for Google to unveil any new addition to the Nexus family.

Google Nexus to launch October 14th

Google is reportedly preparing to launch its next Nexus handset on October 14th.

The Google Nexus 5 has already been at the centre of a number of leaks.
Last month, a Google employee was caught using the phone in a video to promote the launch of Android KitKat.
That was shortly followed by an FCC filing that confirmed the existence of the Nexus 5. The filing also revealed that the handset will feature Qi wireless charging, LTE support, NFC and Bluetooth 4.0.
Previous reports have suggested that the phone will come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. While the FCC filing did not explicitly confirm that, it did strongly suggest that it will use that processor.
The documents also confirmed that the Nexus 5 will come with a 4.96-inch display and be 131.9mm long by 68.2mm wide. No depth was mentioned.
The phone is widely expected to be the first official outing of Android’s next version, KitKat.
It has been suspected for sometime that LG will be the company behind the next Nexus 5. Its LG G2 handset scored highly in reviews.
Though it is impossible to confirm, an October unveiling does make sense. It would be just over one year on from the launch of the Nexus 4.

Expect to see invitations go out during the first week of October if there is any truth behind the rumour.
