At least some in the tech world had pegged Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, whose company is now part of Microsoft fold, as heir apparent for Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.
Ballmer said in October he plans to retire in 12 months. A little over a week later, Microsoft announced its $7.2 billion purchase of Nokia.
At the time, Jason Hines of the TechRepublic blog told USA TODAY, "There's not a lot of obvious candidates out there, but he certainly is," speaking of Elop.
All Things D says Mulally's experience with corporate turnarounds has elevated him to the forefront of Microsoft candidates. Former Boeing engineer Mulally, 68, has been CEO at Ford since 2006.
Microsoft spokesman Mike Houlihan declined comment.
At Ford, Mulally's heir apparent, Mark Fields, downplayed the report.
"There is no change to what we announced in November," said Fields, Ford's chief operating officer. He referred to Mulally's statement at the time that he would stay at Ford through next year.
