Apple has reportedly hired the designer behind the Nike Fuelband.
The Innovation Kitchen is Nike’s creative think tank and is behind the design of many of its products, including the Fuelband and its Flyknit shoe.
Reports have suggested the iPhone maker may have hired Shaffer more for his production efficiency rather than his design work. Shaffer reportedly created a new, more efficient manufacturing process for making the Flyknit.
Current CEO Tim Cook is recognised as the reason behind the company’s incredibly tight supply chain.
If Apple became interested in Shaffer because of his working on the Flyknit, it is very likely his hiring was at the behest of Cook himself.
Little is known about Apple’s work in the wearables arena other than the company is “obviously” looking at new device categories, including wearables.
Shaffer’s appointment follows the hiring of former YSL chief executive Paul Deneve in July.
