Android chief Sundar Pichai confirms the existence of Android KitKat in a post on Google+, where he also notes the operating system has topped 1 billion activations. Android has grown quickly in the past few years, with more than 76% of the smartphones shipping worldwide this year running on the platform, according to Gartner.
Google has always opted for a sweet approach to naming updates of its Android mobile operating system. It started with basics like Cupcake and Donut before moving toward Android 4.1, code-named Jelly Bean.
Now, Google has revealed the code name of its latest Android upgrade: KitKat (cue everyone saying "give me a break").
Details of the partnership between Google and the chocolate-covered wafers are available through a special website that chronicles some of the history of the operating system. As part of this promotion, Kit Kat will give away credits for the Google Play store and a Nexus 7 tablet.
Google has not shared any details on what new features KitKat will offer, but the company could reveal more during the IFA trade show in Berlin.
